Original Acrylic Painting on stretched canvas by Martin Romanovsky: Fifty Shades of Grey & Green (607mm x 748mm)

I watched and photographed this Grey Heron fishing in West Marsh pool (Brandon Marsh, Coventry) from the Steetley Hide, getting excellent views of it stalking it’s prey.  Such a big bird deserves a big canvas and fortunately I had one just the perfect size waiting back at the studio.  A few days later I found myself finishing off the second of my Bee Eater paintings in situ at the East Leake/Rempstone in the  RSPB car cark and wasted no time in getting this Grey Heron painting started.  By the time I packed up the car that day and headed off home I already had the base colours for the background and an outline sketch of the grey heron on the canvas directly from the back screen of my Canon SX500IS camera.  As I was sat there painting, it struck me how many subtle shades of grey were require for the plumage of this magnificent wading bird and the same was true for the background that features the fresh greens of the reedbed at this time of the year.  Hence the name came to me……. ‘Fifty Shades of Grey and Green’.  Perfect to describe the variance in the main colours of this painting whilst maybe cheekily tapping into topical interests at the same time.

As usual, I have used Winsor & Newton Acrylic paint for this piece as I am always pleased with the quality of the pigment and consistency of the paint.  Using acrylics outdoors in relatively warm conditions was a challenge even when using a wet palette but I managed to get the job done anyway.
