Original Watercolour by Martin Romanovsky (490mm x 375mm) on 140lb/300gms Bockingford Watercolour Paper.
I love it when I get to the point of realisation that “this piece of work is finished, stop right now!” and I can put down my paint brush and start planning the next piece of work. This piece was inspired by a trip to Rutland Water back in January 2017 where I got good encounters with Red Kites including this one that was feeding from a carcass in a farmer’s field. It had real attitude and kept looking around shrieking out to others not to approach. I felt like it was saying “This is my meal. Back off!!!!” The original watercolour is available to buy in the online shop and I am proposing to arrange a limited-edition print run of just 50 copies worldwide.
Red Kites are majestic birds of prey with a reddish-brown body and a wingspan of about 178cm; astonishingly that’s nearly 6ft!!! They were persecuted to near extinction in the UK but a very successful protection and reintroduction programme has meant numbers have increased and is now around 1600 breeding pairs spread across England, Wales and Scotland.
